Anca Rotaru - Joseph Giles

Anca Rotaru Collaboration

Anca Rotaru

We are thrilled to partner with internationally recognised interior designer Anca Rotaru on exciting new products.

Having trained in Spain as an architect, Anca now works from a London design studio, discovering that attention to the finest details is what inspires her creativity and gives her more control over and satisfaction with the final result.

Anca is well known in the industry for her playful and versatile designs, her understanding of space, her use of geometric shapes and lines, and her colourful yet elegant style.

She shares the same values as Joseph Giles, making this collaboration extra special. Our exacting perfectionism, which came to light during previous projects with Anca, particularly attracted her to working with us.

Design inspiration

Anca came to Joseph Giles with ideas radiated with vibrancy, modernity and fun. These are exemplified in her choice of bold RAL colours and signature geometric shapes, connecting larger volumes with slimmer elements, for the Arrieta door handle range.

The lever handle draws inspiration from two iconic designs of the 20th century – the 1950s Ball Clocks by American designer George Nelson, and the giant wind toys by Spanish artist César Manrique located on his home island of Lanzarote. Arrieta, the village where the first of Manrique’s commissions was installed in 1992, lends its name to our new products.

Joseph Giles design team

A holistic design vision and meticulous eye for detail at Joseph Giles have maintained our supremely high standards, with top interior designers lining up to collaborate.

Our Product Development Lead Pete Green and his team were tasked with bringing Anca’s vision to life, ensuring aesthetics without compromising on functionality. Despite her joyful and contemporary design being a seismic shift from our usual products, we found it struck a fine chord with us and posed an exciting challenge.

Some hurdles were to be overcome including how such a slim handle could be manufactured from solid brass, and with such tight bend, while avoiding cracking.

Introducing the Arrieta

Through close collaboration and precision engineering, the team created the handsome curve in the Arrieta lever that gives its distinctive mid-century style. Epoxy powder coating was chosen for its perfect levels of sheen and durability, providing the colour snap on the spherical handle elements.

Classic Joseph Giles metallic finishes such as dark waxed bronze and midnight black were selected for the Arietta II range, achieving a more elegant and sophisticated look.

As in all our lever handles, the inner rota-bearing sprung rose mechanism was equipped in the Arrieta to grant smooth, precise operation every time. This unique industry-leading system eliminates drooping and wobbling for many years to come.
